I want to submit ONE coin to NGC.
    I estimate it's catalog value at $150.
    That's the Economy tier.
    BUT
The Economy tier requires a minimum submission of 5 coins.

Can I use the Early Bird tier which doesn't have the 5-coin minimum?
Yeh, it costs more but it's better than trying to find 4 more coins.
I'll also be adding the VarietyPlus option.

Maybe you can piggy back on another members submission here. With the shipping cost back and forth and Early Bird submission cost that might be an option.

You don't need to find 4 more coins to make it worthwhile. Check the math here.

    Early Bird:
    1 coin = $35 + $8 + $21 = $64
    2 coins = $70 + $8 + $21 = $99
    3 coins = $105 +$8 + $21 = $134

    Value:
    5 coins = $90 + $8 + $24 = $122

You only really need to find 2 more coins to make value a cheaper option. Then you can just submit a couple marginal coins to round it out.

You omitted the VarietyPlus option cost ($15).

The coin is an 1809 Half Cent, "o in 0" variety.
I'm looking for it to grade VF-something.

Variety Plus doesn't have an impact on the relative cost as it doesn't apply to all coins on the order

It does when the order consists of only one coin.

IF it comes back VF-something then I would have paid about half of its catalog value to get it slabbed.
Considering how long it took me to find one (not the one I just submitted to NGC) and how much I paid for it I believe it is a LOT scarcer with a higher catalog value than what is reporting.
I got mine (VF-20 BN) from Chris McCawley and am confident that I didn't Overpay, at least not by much.

If you're into this issue, try to find one at catalog.
