Hello all, Does anyone know anything about the following items? Thank you for any info! @Burton Strauss III (1) NGC Promotional Holder ...the cool thing about this one is that I have actually bought from and sold to this dealer...anyone know if this is a common or more scarce slab? (2) These just say "Certified MS65" in the lower left corner and can easily be opened...I think I have seen these before, but don't remember where. Is it a Littleton product?
I don't think that slab has anything to do with NGC. They do sell slabs that you can basically put whatever coin and label you want into it.
It is made by NGC for the bigger dealers. I'm trying to find out more about this specific one; I do know about promotional holders in general. http://samplecoinslabs.com/index.ht...bs-arent-promotional-slabs-but-some-are-both/ Reverse of slab:
OK Thanks for showing the reverse side now. I didn't know And.. I think you answered your own question with the link you provided Also.. here is the North Bay website http://www.northbayrarecoin.com/
Whizzer, your self slabbing is irrelevant & Denis is correct, this is a legit NGC product, manufactured by them, sonically sealed, etc. Paddyman, you appear to be correct in that the dealer could basically dictate the text. In The Sample Slabs book, @Davidschwager lists a couple from this type, NGC-025-9-2 from John Maben and NGC-025-9-3 from NGC itself. Maybe some new ones in the 2nd edition also. The assumption - unverified AFAIK - is that NGC did these to allow dealers to promote themselves to customers (and cross-promote NGC). Probably did a box at a time or whatever at dirt cheap prices since there is no grading involved, and the dealer probably had to provide the coins. Denis - if you know these people, it would be worth a call to see if they might remember the quantity, cost, timeframe, etc.
I have dealt with them at a a few shows, but don't know them too well. I might try to contact them or just wait until the next show and see if I can ask in person. So this particular one is not in the Sample Slab book?
For all the odd and questionable things the TPG's do with labeling, this seems like a reasonable cross-marketing ploy.
@dwhiz There is nothing wrong with putting items into your own slabs to save money. Many items don't need to be certified and this is the perfect alternative to keeping those coins in safer conditions at a lower cost. By the way, you should add your cointalk avatar on the back of your self slab and then you'd have you own personal slab (maybe it'll even become collectible).
Also, anyone know anything about the holders in part (2)? @Conder101 Is it a Littleton or some similar company's product?
Not in v1... I didn't submit it for v2, but somebody else might have. Otherwise it's for v3 in 2018. They don't. It's likely a few have been improperly sealed over the years. And at least one poster has commented he can crack them cleanly in a vice. But they don't get out intentionally...
It isn't a slab, just a Whitman style plastic 2X2 with a paper label inside it. You will almost certainly find it is not sealed in any way. (Certified? By whom? No company name or even initials) Any one who wants to make up something like that can do it.
Update on the NGC Promotional Holder according to the dealer: ~NGC ran a promotion circa 2004-2005 for this type of holder ~We can thus assume this holder was from 2005 (based on the coin being a 2005) ~This type had about 200 produced @Burton Strauss III
IMO, Any Authorized Dealer can ask and pay for these types of slabs. As for collectibility? I suppose that folks can collect whatever they want but I think that having them mentioned or even referenced in a "Sample Slab" book or document is a bit over the top. Anybody collect Matchbooks?
