The question of whether to submit to NGC or PCGS comes up frequently. And the answer is both. It all depends on the coin. Some series you are better off sending to PCGS, others NGC. Within the Jefferson Nickel series, it becomes a coin by coin decision. PCGS is almost an entire grade more conservative than NGC, but NGC is much more strict in the application of the full step designation where the real money in the series lies. So when evaluating a Jefferson Nickel, you need to be able to predict both the NGC & PCGS numerical grade in addition to whether it would qualify for full steps from neither, PCGS, or both TPG's. Then you need to look at the price guides and figure out which TPG provides you with the best financial advantage.

My guess is that if you ask any professional coin dealer, they will tell you that they submit coins to both PCGS & NGC depending upon the coin. Anyone who makes a blanket statement that one TPG is better than the other is making an emotional decision, not one based on financial return. After all, the basic premise for asking the question is which TPG will yield you the best value for your grading fees. If your decision about which TPG to use is based on any other factor, there would be no reason to ask the question in the first place.

Furthermore, those who only collect coins in one type of plastic are also making a mistake IMO. There are phenomenal coins that reside in both NGC & PCGS plastic. To disregard one or the other as a buyer seems foolish to me. That said, I understand the OCD reason for crossing coins so that an entire collection can be in the same holders even though I don't personally do it.
