I prefer NGC. I own NGC slabbed coins, and their holders are clean, professional looking and high quality. Do I buy the coin for the coin or the holder? It's a little bit of both I guess. But I'm not against PCGS. I may buy some PCGS eventually, but they will have to really stand out and be a fair price.
Both PCGS and NGC due a great job, and are much better than all the others put together. However, I think PCGS comes out slightly ahead because, their registry and coin inventory for collectors is much better than NGC. When I buy a NGC coin for my collection (and I often do), I cross it to PCGS so I can get it in my registry. I suspect there is a mountain of collectors that do this also, resulting in more demand for PCGS coins over NGC.
I more of see grading services as a way of having an investment in coins. You know what your buying, it is in a great holder to protect it, and when it's time to sell, the coin is bought for the label attached with it. If you just collect coins, I feel you can find great looking coins, and not pay out the nose for a piece of paper that states a grade.
I seek out ICG slabs because the lower price more than makes up for it being possibly over-graded. So you drop a grade, its usually cheaper than one grade down.. I'm not a stickler for grade anyway and I like how ICG slabs scare off the lemmings.
I prefer NGC, but own many PCGS slabbed coins as well. I own 2 full years of presidential dollars in ANACS holders and because of that I got them for dirt cheap (~$35 per set PF70). As for ICG, now that I'm more comfortable in my grading ability, I definitely look at the coins in their slabs. I start with the mind set they are over graded and proceed from there.
I like NGC holders better find many customers prefer pcgs I buy the coin tho ya think anyone's gonna crack out their Eric p Newman NGC slabs and send them to pcgs lol I doubt it to me their about even I hate anacs holders but I'll buy a nice coin in one crack it out and send it to one or the other depending on the coin I feel NGC grades higher based on eye appeal and pcgs more technical they'll give a high grade often to a coin with no problems but no pizazz either
Of the three top tier grading services PCGS, NGC, and ANACS, ANACS is the one grading service I won't buy a coin slabbed by them to go into my Liberty Seated type set because I just don't like their holder, it just looks cheap! For my other type sets which are in Capital Plastics holders I would buy an ANACS slabbed coin if I like it because it will be released from its gaudy prison IMHO.
Anacs holders are awful they won't stack their hard to handle and astheticaly challenged if its a nice coin it deserves a nicer holder in my opinion plus it helps the resale value and makes organizing my collection (yea right) easier
Guess I am an "advanced collector." Over recent years, I have grown to love the toned coins in NGC plastic, particularly the star coins. Have plenty of PCGS ones also, so balance in life is good--Yin/Yang.
LoL. So far all of the slabs I have tried (ANACS, NGC, PCGS, etc.) fit very nicely into the now otherwise empty plastic used diaper baby wipe boxes (which stow nicely in the safe). I buy the coin not the holder. Indeed on more than one occasion I have been known to break out the skilsaw and a screwdriver to pry the coin out of the holder and put the coin into the Whitman book, then junk the holder. The only difference I notice is some have occasional green flames when I burn the trash. No, I don't know which ones that was 'cause I just let the fire burn.
