    Great discussion folks,

If I owned a FS slabbed coin, I'd would keep it in the holder just in case it ever did appreciate.

Hey, we all know it's a bogus designation for strictly marketing purposes. However, nevertheless, there are people that are willing to pay more for it than not. Accordingly, in the chance that you ever might want to sell it I'd leave it alone in case it might fetch a premium.

As for your own set of ASE (or whatever), if you're keeping them in an albumn, you can get your own first strikes by simply cherry-picking the offerings at your local dealer. I order my yearly roll of ASE's by mail, but for the grandkids, niece and nephew and my folder, I just buy them local. Yeah, I pay a bit more, but am able to go thru a dozen or so and pick up the best strikes. And THESE, my friends are worth more to everyone should I ever want to sell. Cripe, for your own stuff, always go for the best strikes you can afford.

    peace,

    rono

I do not have a dog in this fight ( or a horse in this race ) but.... I would keep that " First Strike " coin in its original holder for posterity.

You should email those images to the guy (discussed in another thread somewhere) that had 2 pages of text denouncing first strikes so he can include them in his auctions. Gets the point across better than his two pages really.

I would think that the existence of TPGs contributes to the high price of coins by making buyers overconfident that the huge premiums that sometimes exist between MS64 and MS65 can really be substantiated with confidence, even if the confidence isn't justified. If the TPGs go away, buyers will have to be more cautious before laying out 3X as much money for one grade as for the next higher grade.

But I don't expect the TPGs to disappear because the vast majority of people no longer seem to be the do-it-yourself type and prefer to pay an "expert" for the service.

    Good grief!!!

This ebay listing (2006 AMERICAN SILVER EAGLE 20th ANNIVERSARY 3 COIN SET!) contained the following words of wisdom:

THE SETS FOR SALE IN THIS AUCTION I PURCHASED THE FIRST 5 MINUTES THEY WENT ON SALE, SO THESE SETS ARE FIRST STRIKES! THE SHIPPING DATE ON BOX FROM US MINT IS 10/11/06!

Where do you begin with the coin selling and buying public to begin to address the misconception revealed by this listing.

Besides, I could have gotten him a "Shipped on Wednesday" certification from NGC. Add a $3.00 "I am King of the coin collecting universe" wooden box and it would be worth, easily $550.
