There are limits to what we will put on a label. We reject more than we accept. None of the ones you listed Ken would be acceptable.

Are you saying that if I send coins in from my personal collection, you guys could put "Sallent Collection" on the label of the coins I submit?

Does NGC have a counterfeit specialist opening? Counterfeits are slowing starting to be my strong suit

I suppose a photo of a TIF tee shirt would be too much to ask on a label so brief instructions for opening would have to do.
I realize that I am not the target market for slabbed coins but the idea that the submitter can specify what is on the label seems more offensive than what is written. Do you allow such things as 'ex Dattari collection'?

If the coin were from the Dattari Collection then yes we would put that. Why would we not? I'm confused.

I have a few coins with old envelopes identifying well known collectors/dealers from decades past. Why can't I have an Ex. Tom Cederlind if I have an envelope that proves the coin came from him?

Time to end this discussion on what will and won't be allowed on a label. I'm not going to continue to reply to every possible thing that might go on a label. If you want to know if we will allow it, submit the coins and we will let you know.

In my opinion a dealers inventory is not a pedigree. Anything that will be listed as "ex" will need to be illustrated somewhere documenting that it is "ex". A lose ticket or envelope is not documentation. I did a coin a few minutes ago that's supposedly ex Knobloch Sale, but unfortunately it's not illustrated in Knobloch, so the pedigree is not going on the ticket.

This is my understanding too. When attributing a coin from an auction I'll list it as 'ex' so and so with auction number, date, and lot number. If it was purchased from a dealer's inventory I'll list it as 'acquired from' so and so and the date.

The reason I see is that either you would have to confirm that the coin was in fact the Dattari specimen meaning you spent the time to look it up or you would be taking the word of the submitter which may or may not be accurate.

The similar situation comes up when you accept something of the Sallent Collection suggesting to the target audience (who tend to be less informed?) that there is some special situation associated with that name but the only thing special is that Sallent bought it and sold it.

I know you stated that you will not answer specifics but how do you decide if a coin was ex (a collection name) or just sold by a dealer? How many exes would this coin qualify for? It still appears on both of our web pages. I suspect these days there would be a market for multiple provenances beyond what would fit in the space.

I really wish I had bought more of those coins when they were available. There were some real winners included.

@dougsmit It is a fact that all my coins are part of the Sallent Collection, as that is the identity the collector who owns those particular coins chooses to publicly go by (key word 'collector' as I am not a dealer). Why is it any less of an important attribution than the typical stuff you see in Agora and other auction houses with the description "From the collection of a Texas Doctor", or The (insert random name) Collection. Just because the person or the collection itself is not famous doesn't mean the attribution is not accurate nor has any value.

Frankly, I may have a few Agora coins attributed to "The Collection of a California Dentist" or "The (random name) collection," etc. Since Agora attributes a particular source to those coins, why can't I have NGC then add that attribution to a holder? I could care less if someone down the line decides coins from my collection with the label "Sallent Collection" or "Collection of a California Dentist" don't have any extra value....that's up to the future bidders to use their brains and decide for themselves whenever my collection goes for sale (when I get too old and decide to downsize, or die). The facts remain that those attributions are factual and not misleading. My coins, which I personally own, are the Sallent Collection. That is an easily verifiable statement. Whether the collection is famous, mediocre, noteworthy, or forgettable, that's up to future would-be-owners to decide for themselves.

If Sallent submits the coins, he can put from the Sallent Collection. If Sallent submits the coins, he can not put from the Doug Smith Collection on the label.

Concerning pedigrees like Dattari or Jameson or NFA auction 3, we confirm them all before we put the info on a label.

In order to be “ex” it needs to be verifiable, in most cases published with a photo. A dealers illustrated fixed price list is a verifiable “ex”. A dealers inventory ticket, which could be switched with any coin of similar type is not verifiable. The fact that a dealer bought a coin and had it in stock for a period of time is really irrelevant.

Having nothing to do with slab labels, the fact today is that many more coins will be identifiable because almost every list now photographs every coin and not just the high end material. The Dattari collection became a valuable reference because it illustrated so many coins that were not shown in most books. In my Septimius Severus interest, it seemed important to own certain sale catalogs (Arnold, Kelly) because so few illustrated catalogs bothered with such ordinary coins. I wonder how the 'cheap photo' era we have today will effect the book trade in the next century. I enjoy the Emmett book on Alexandrian coins but it has very few photos. Add it to the thousands of online dealer images we have today and the thousands expected each year, when will the expensive illustrated references of the last century be made unnecessary by the combination of unillstrated texts and online image sources. The big difference is the searchability of online images compared to having to guess which catalog might have illustrated that type. How will this change in the upcoming years?

I would have thought this covered it. If a coin is unpublished even as an auction illustration, the burden of proof is on the person submitting the coin. That said, when I buy from an auction I take the house illustration and description and post it into a Word file for that particular sale. Come the day it is to be submitted for sale, the appropriate pages can accompany, fwiw.

I don't know about that; in ancient Roman times some were kept as pets -- well kept anyway. In any event keeping one on a chain in the backyard can help deter burglars as well reducing the problems from stray dogs and cats.

I would like to learn to grade but don't want to work for NGC. Does NGC Ancients offer grading seminars?
