[QUOTE="mnmvick, post: 676844, member: 15626"]You know, you would think that with inflation, the penny needs to go away and the half needs to come back, but these golden dollars are dying on the vine. Personnally, I have spend thousands of dollars worth of them over the last year and a half (been buying them $250 at a time from the US Mint because my bank doesn't carry them) but NOBODY wants them. I talked to a store owner who summed it up best "I don't want them, customers don't want them, and the banks don't want them."

Trouble is - the mint stopped making halves for general curculation a few years ago, so there probably aren't many out there right now. I have been going to the bank every so often and ORDERING (cause they don't keep them in stock) $500 and going through them. You will find a proof in every case, although I once got an entire $500 box that was entirely 1976D. That was really boring, let me tell you . . .

Talking about credit/debit cards though - yes - those have come on STRONG in the last 5 years or so, but we really should get off of them as a nation. All they do is add a 3% tax to everything we buy and sell, which of course us consumers wind up paying for in the end, and Visa and Mastercard just scrape it right off the top. It is like they are a super-government, taxing us all for everything we buy! Hopefully banks will have to start charging more fees here soon and people will move back to cash. The FDIC is about to raise their rates on deposits and that will, of course, have to get passed onto us consumers.

But, since our coins have no intrinsic value anymore - maybe THAT is why we use plastic all of the time. We know that cash is basically worthless too.

But I carry halfs with me and drop them on sales folks when necessary. Had a guy at Taco Bell ask me if it was a dollar the other day.
