I agree with bringing back some new liberty design... I don't care for Reagan nor Nixon, but if they EVER did put them on real coin, I hope they do a portrait of Reagan in a cowboy hat and nixon bowling.
This topic came up a while back. The solution is to use a circulating dollar coin and mass produce $2 bills. The strippers have not gotten a raise in a long time. IMO, it is way overdue.
The Kennedy half is one of our most beautiful coins, and the only American I can think of whose profile might adorn a new half would be GDJMSP.
Yes, I had considered that. But since my suggestion had the current half dollar used only as a commemorative, the Mint would issue them in silver and packaged much like the current ASE's. Anyone that would unpackage such a coin AND spend it as a dollar thinking they were doubling their money deserves the loss (bullion value). In spite of the nonsense the judicial system sometimes comes up with, Americans HAVE to take responsibility for their own actions.
I wasn't considering using the "new" commemorative halves as dollars, I was thinking more along the lines of the 2.7 billion clad Kennedys out there struck from 1971 to 2000. All of those old clad half dollars could be passed as dollars.
Mlk There's been serious talk about putting Martin Luther King on a coin. Also, there was a push to put Reagan on the dime.
I think a change would be good, but I'd like to see a one year reverse on the Kennedy half before it gets replaced. I am however, unsure of what the design should be.
You know, you would think that with inflation, the penny needs to go away and the half needs to come back, but these golden dollars are dying on the vine. Personnally, I have spend thousands of dollars worth of them over the last year and a half (been buying them $250 at a time from the US Mint because my bank doesn't carry them) but NOBODY wants them. I talked to a store owner who summed it up best "I don't want them, customers don't want them, and the banks don't want them." Trouble is - the mint stopped making halves for general curculation a few years ago, so there probably aren't many out there right now. I have been going to the bank every so often and ORDERING (cause they don't keep them in stock) $500 and going through them. You will find a proof in every case, although I once got an entire $500 box that was entirely 1976D. That was really boring, let me tell you . . . Talking about credit/debit cards though - yes - those have come on STRONG in the last 5 years or so, but we really should get off of them as a nation. All they do is add a 3% tax to everything we buy and sell, which of course us consumers wind up paying for in the end, and Visa and Mastercard just scrape it right off the top. It is like they are a super-government, taxing us all for everything we buy! Hopefully banks will have to start charging more fees here soon and people will move back to cash. The FDIC is about to raise their rates on deposits and that will, of course, have to get passed onto us consumers. But, since our coins have no intrinsic value anymore - maybe THAT is why we use plastic all of the time. We know that cash is basically worthless too. But I carry halfs with me and drop them on sales folks when necessary. Had a guy at Taco Bell ask me if it was a dollar the other day. I gave him a look of disgust and said "Read the coin man - read the coin." *sigh*
I have a little bit different experience using dollar coins and halves, people tend to think that I am giving away a rare coin, because they do not see it in commerce that often. They are legal tender for all debts private and public and I will continue to use them, at our estate sale this weekend we used sbas for change, and used over thirty of them, most people liked getting them, something they do not see every day, now that is change you can believe in.
"But I carry halfs with me and drop them on sales folks when necessary. Had a guy at Taco Bell ask me if it was a dollar the other day." I bet that kid could tell you names of three-hundred different video games he's played, though!:headbang:
Obama! he hasn't even came close to earning his strips yet maybe MLK. How about we just leave the half alone or just stop minting them, we never use them anyways. I would like to see for the collectors a commemorative silver half of all 3 of the Kennedy brothers together now that would be sweet!!! Please don't take this the wrong way, I don't have anything against Obama, I think his time will come but others have already earned a chance to be on our coinage. Just a thought anyways. Bob
