I find references and particularly geographic info like this to be most helpful. The changing names and broders of loacles confuses me moreso than the cast of characters and their titles when reading ancient history. I now keep a file of ancient maps, many from FORVM ANCIENTS, within easy reach when reading these histories.
The first thing I do when I research a coin is look up the location on a map. I'm not sure why, but knowing where the coin came from geographically imbues it with a certain tangible reality. Perhaps the coin needs to be connected to a place as well as a time.
I think that's very true. I also need geographic reference when reading the histories of the key characters. I have also added a column to my provincial coin spread sheet where I add the locale as it is today.
