Raw... I have another example where the only remnants of the strike is a little bit of the rim which I bought maybe 5 years ago from Jon Sullivan at ANA in Chicago. This one was a bit cheaper. I think that what happens with these is the planchette splits and then the piece comes flying off as it leaves the coining chamber. Both exhibit the combination of partial reverse and partial obverse design on the visible surface.
plan·chette planˈSHet/ noun noun: planchette; plural noun: planchettes a small board supported on casters, typically heart-shaped and fitted with a vertical pencil, used for automatic writing and in seances. should be: planch·et ˈplan(t)SHət/ noun noun: planchet; plural noun: planchets a plain metal disk from which a coin is made.
Don't know if it happens to others, but autocheck keeps changing planchet to planchette for me. If I don't pay attention, I end up with the wrong word when I actually typed planchet. I make a enough real spelling mistakes, I don't need spell check making them for me.
