Coming my way in a swap. This is my first “Rose” type guinea. Previously I’ve owned one George III “Spade” type guinea.

What a beautiful coin, congratulations! I have seen the sale record in Heritage 2013 where this coin appears. The reverse of the coin with the crowned shield bearing the arms of England+Scotland, France, Ireland and Hanover, with the legend M B F ET H REX F D B ET L D S R I A T ET E and the date ("King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Arch-Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire") is simply beautiful.

Interesting. I haven’t researched the prior auction sales. I am getting the coin in a swap with Atlas Numismatics. I traded them this.

An 18th century gold coin for a boring (IMO) modern. Nothing not to like about that trade!

Yes. Less gold bullion content with this guinea than I had in the modern Peruvian coin, but much more history.

The spot value on the Peruvian was similar to Atlas Numismatics’ asking price on the guinea, so I offered a swap and they accepted.

What's the difference in a rose or spade guinea?

    Beautiful coin BTW.

As I understand it, it’s all about the coat of arms on the reverse. With this, the “Rose” type, that coat of arms supposedly looks like a rose somehow? (I don’t see it, myself.) On the “Spade” type guineas, the coat of arms is shield shaped, and resembles the shape of a spade or shovel.

I do see the difference. If I squint my eyes and hold my phone far away, I suppose that's a rose!
