Hello ladies and gentlemen, Santa Claus came a little early this year ... with some Greek coins. I wasn't interested in them, concentrating on Roman Imperial and Provincial but I decided it's a good idea to study this area and, of course, adding some to my collection. So as promised to @Ryro, these are my new additions (I only had 2 in my collection) Macedon. Thessalonica circa 187-131 BC. Bronze Æ 20 mm, 5,19 g. Portrait of Janus was something I wanted in my collection --------------------------- Kings of Macedon. Kolophon . Alexander III "the Great" 336-323 BC. Drachm AR 17 mm, 3,75 g. Really admired the design of this drachm, seeing various examples here on CT. The conservation and the price were quite satisfactory for me. ---------------- Thrace. Apollonia Pontica circa 425-375 BC. Drachm AR 14 mm., 3,02 g. Also a coin I first saw here on CT. Couldn't resist it. -------------- Kings of Thrace. Uncertain mint. Macedonian. Lysimachos 305-281 BC. Bronze Æ 18 mm., 4,26 g This wasn't on my wish list, but animals on coins is a big trigger for me. ------------- Attica. Athens circa 454-404 BC. Hemiobol AR 6 mm., 0,27 g. I think an Athens owl is a must have but from what I noticed, they can get quite expensive and because my budget is not something to brag about, I settled with this conservation. Not unhappy though, I find the size/weight very interesting -------------- Mysia. Kyzikos circa 480-400 BC. Hemiobol AR 9 mm., 0,40 g. One of the coins I discovered here on CT and I really wanted an example. -------------------- Aiolis. Kyme circa 350-320 BC. Bronze Æ 11 mm., 1,19 g. I simply liked it, a coin showing an animal is something I always like Ionia. Ephesos circa 500-420 BC. Diobol AR 11 mm., 0,92 g One of the coins I also saw here for the first time. Love the style. Ionia. Miletos circa 525-475 BC. Tetartemorion AR 5 mm., 0,08 g. 2 animals? I'm in. Really curious to see this coin in hand (I don't think the weight is correct to be honest, the details were provided by the auction house)
Caria. Kasolaba circa 420-400 BC. Hemiobol AR 7 mm., 0,46 g. Ram/sheep? I'm in as I never saw one on a coin until today. Caria. Mylasa circa 210-30 BC. Bronze Æ 11 mm., 1,68 g. A horse cannot miss from the list of coins showing, mainly, animals. Lydia. Thyateira circa 200-100 BC. Bronze Æ 14 mm., 3,38 g. I missed, during the last months, some coins from Thyateira, usually Roman provincials, I wanted one because of the reverse with the axe. Now I had the chance to get one and I didn't refuse. These would be my first Greek coins, except 2 that I already had. I know these are not spectacular in condition, but I consider them a very good addition in my album and, last but not least, the price was very decent.
I am not an expert in Greek coins, by no means, I don't know if any of them are rare. Rarity in ancient coins is quite relative, if we compare them to modern coins. But anyway, I like all of them and I think Santa was generous this year
Wonderful, artistic and diverse coins! Now that you've got the bug, there's no going back I'm a fan of Janiform heads and macedon and have several of these types as well:
I must admit that finding CT forum was a big help in my numismatic activity. Most of the coins bought now were seen here so, why not getting them? I knew something about Roman coins before joining this forum, but nothing about Greek ones. So I wish all of you Merry Christmas, all the best and I hope 2021 will bring back our normal lives.
Congratulations on a great batch of coins. Like you, I too focused on Roman coins until just recently, but after winning a few lots of Greek coins, I'm now hooked. So much to learn.
Those are all GREAT coins, congrats on the bevy, @ambr0zie ! Very nice. I really enjoy your style! I have a few or differing variations of them: RAM - I raised sheep and cattle growing up...
