Newfoundland?!?!?

    afm1982 Miami has the Dolphins...

    I came across an old Newfoundland 50 cent coin (see pics below). I never really knew much about these types of things. We all know our Canadian history (sort of) but the coins has had me puzzled.

    Why was Newfoundland minting its own coins? Did other provinces do the same?

    Also, importantly, should I just drop it before I become completely consumed by these types of coins?

    Please share your knowledge of Newfoundland coins. Any and all information that you can give is greatly appreciated.

    Newfoundland was a separate colony (later dominion) until it joined with Canada in 1949.

    I love it , lately I've been buying anything I like . I just bought 2 Newfoundland Vickies off a friend from Canada . I'd hold on to it as the mintages were quite low , especially compared to ours . Plus Victorian coins are always in demand .
