The majority were split between 63 and 64, which I agree with. The marks on the cheek hurt but the color more than makes up for that. I believe MS 63 is a fair grade (and isn't really even color bumped).
You know my love for toners. At the peak, before I sold over 250 toned Morgans in 2015, I had 475 toned coins of many different series.
I guessed 62+ way to many bag marks on the cheek to go much higher. Pretty coin and acceptibme at 63.
I think its worth a little color premium, but bag marks matter when they're in a distracting spot. The coin can have some, but it depends where. I'd buy this coin solely for the awesome color rather than the technical grade. It's just appealing and I'm not entirely a color lover
Actually, I like the color on the coin. Hence the reason I gave it a + The full periferal toning obv and rev has the look of album toning and gives it some originality. If in hand it looked better than a 63 I might pay 64 money for it. But, the coin would need to have some impressive luster.
I have no issue with this coin as a 63. If you look at what is acceptable in 65 holders nowadays, this coin is no where near overgraded (and I'm not saying that due to ownership as I have called out my own coins as overgraded before). The other thing to note, is that this is a better date. Greysheet is $110/$400/$1,700 as a 63/64/65 (per HA). That could have played a role in the grading. It didn't really matter to me as I was comfortable paying above 64 levels based on the color. Also luster is very different throughout the Morgan series. San Francisco minted examples (particularly those from 1880-1882) often have the best luster while most other dates and mints (especially New Orleans and Philadelphia aren't the same).
Here are two higher graded examples where the cheek was arguably the same or worse (the first I used to own).
That is why I said it could have been a 65. As I said before, counting bagmarks is not the correct way to grade Morgans. The OP coin is not very different from the two examples above. The date is a more difficult than average one for Morgans. I have no problem with the OP coin at 63; I would not have had a problem with it at 64, or 65. Dual sided rainbow peripheral toning is highly desirable on Morgans. I would have bought that coin, with a toning premium, although not moon money, as the toning is very attractive, but peripheral. In our game of toned coins, it would have been a 4 for me.
