Buy the book before the coin. Join the ANA. Read numismatic publications like Coin World, Numismatic News, Coins Magazine, etc. If you want to fill the holes in your Whitman folders, get rolls of coins from your bank and plug them in. Be aware that those folders will not likely appreciate significantly in value during your lifetime.
Oh, and another thing, don't count out any local flea markets. Just like eBay and shops, you have to be careful. The trick is to find a vendor or two who you can develop a good rapport with, don't spend a ton of money at first, just feel them out, then decide if it's worth doing more business with them. I get a lot of deals with a particular vendor at my local market, but I've been working on that relationship for a few years now. But he knows what I want, and makes the effort to find it at a reasonable price for me. Check out all your options, don't be in a big hurry to buy any one particular coin. If by chance it does get away, another will come along soon. Part of collecting is patience.
Hi 1WheatCent, I would not buy those coins. I would like to say that you can actually find proofs in bank rolls. I find the most common are half dollars and nickels. I find at least 1 proof half dollar each week. Just my 2 cents, JobIII
