    Hello all,

I was thumbing through one of my great grandfathers penny albums and found three proof-like steel pennys. The 1943 one has 943 doubled in the date. My question is does anyone know of this error?

Your coin could be a "variety" coin or it could be just a simple case of machine doubling which would just be considered damage. I would recommend that you join our "Variety Coins" group and post scans if possible there. Post your question on the board,we have several Lincoln Cent specialists on hand to answer your question's. :D
    Questions to consider....
Have you examined it under good magnification?
Is the doubling flat or rounded?
Does the doubled area display split serifs?
Once we get a grasp on what exactly you have we can give you a accurate answer to your question.I'll look forward to hearing from you! ~ Jim

Thanks for your replies, I'm fairly new to collecting. My great grandfather collections is about 600+ coins. I've got my work cut out for me lol... The penny has got a mirror finish on it that makes it hard to see the doubling at first. As for looking under magnification, all i've got is a handheld magnifier and from what i can tell the doubling does apear rounded. Split serifs? Like I said i'm new. Haven't collected coins since I was a kid. As for pictures I don't have a digital camera or scanner so I'll have to see what I do about that.

I just looked at the penny on E-bay and the one i have has more doubling. The doubling of the three and four is clear to the eye in the right angle of light.

A serif is the little notch part of letters on certain fonts.Lettering that doesn't have these serifs are refered to as sans-serif or no serif. The default font here in Coin Talk is sans serif.
This font has serifs (I hope! lol) see the difference? on a doubled die,the serif part with have a notch between the two points.
Here's a article on doubled dies that may help,it's written by JT Stanton,co-author of the Cherry Picker's Guide and long time member of EW1. Here's the link...

Lol, now I feel dumb. I should have known you were talking about fonts. Thanks again. Looking over that site now. I think i've gone partially blind and dumb from looking over 600 coins lol. Added about 500 to coin manage program already. Just basically cataloging them for now.

I love the internet because it allows us to do so much for our fellow collector's without a price, hey free is good and we try to do as much as possible for FREE. :D Most things on the internet can be had free if you look around long enough. I just used this, and added a few key discounts and free prizes, to put together a club with many free benefits for it's member's. I don't believe any other club today offers so much for so little.(zip, nada, nothing) and we profit for this only by helping out and raising h*ll lol. We're all collector's networking with fellow collector's to help the hobby. I'm the original founder of EW Groups and I've never taken anything in payment.EW Groups is free...period.
