The local river god appears on all known silver coins of the city, and on both sides of this stater! </p><p><br /></p><p>Ed Waddell had just put this coin out and, not knowing if I would ever see another one, I snatched it up. All coinage of Laos (Laus) is rare and this coin is very rare. SNG ANS lists 446 silver coins for Metapontum and 7 for Laos. Sear, Greek Coins (1978, No. 232) values it at £1,250.
