Good lighting and use a thick white felt to cover it so everything stands out also so your coins dont get damaged. ~Corbyn
OH! My turn! I wanna give a suggestion! Put a big oversized jeweler's magnifying glass on the stand that allows you to move it and adjust it anywhere. Like the pixar lamps!:hail:
Thanks for all the suggestions... I took into consideration some of the tips offered here, rolled up my sleeves and set to work. I loved the idea of a shallow drawer, I am adding one so I can put new coins into it for closer inspection. I'll be getting a good magnifier lamp too. I will have my desktop computer on the desk, I thought I would just use a power strip for all my lights and devices since I don't expect there will be many more than 4 or 5 (computer, 2 or 3 lamps). We have a wireless network so everything else will be located elsewhere. Here's what it looks like so far:
i would make a droor that can hold 100 of each size of 2x2s in individual slots and a space for the stapler and staples to sit in the same droor. ive been thinking about how im going to design my desk when we move and i can have a man cave finally lol im gonna add this page to my favorites so i can reference it when i go to build mine.
I dont know what type of collection you have but there is room to put a nice safe under your desk top or something I like to do is a roll around drawer bank or shelf unit and have the top as a second desk top you can even make the top over hang on the side you will be sitting on so you dont have to lean over as much. Also looks like the wall behind where you are going to be sitting looks big enough to build a shelf unit that is deep enough to fit the coin albums or boxes how ever you store your coins also would do a top on it so you have some where to set stuff out so you can go through larger amounts of stuff and then I would do a open shelf upper cabinet above that same at the same depth you could even mount lights under the upper cabinets. You have a nice little space there with a lot of options. I would also do an upper shelf unit above your desk. I would drill a large 1 1/2" hole in the desktops back corner and buy a electrical plastic gromet insert so your cords can pass through and not have the rough hole. Have fun
I enjoy posting a photo my desk at every opportunity. Sometimes the pull-out writing surface seperates from the slides and all the coins end up on the floor. Gentlemen, this is NOT the way to display/store your collection.
I do have a safe, it will fit nicely under the drawer end of the desk. The drawer is about 2.5 inches deep and will be lined with some kind of felt or cloth, perfect for putting raw coins into or even storing boxes 2x2 flips if I choose to do that. Next I will be mounting 2 full-length shelves above the desk, about 12" deep to hold my coin binders (it will have to support a lot of weight), books, and supplies. Power will be supplied by a power strip mounted to the underside of the desk on the right end. I'll drill a hole through the desk there, where cords will pass through, with the excess tucked into the space between the top and bottom surface of the desk.
