I ordered a set from the mint not 24 hours ago. I don't collect moderns however I do own every year set back to 1970. I bought these because of the Atlantic Salmon on the Fifty Pence and the flora that symbolises the four nations of the UK – a rose for England, a daffodil for Wales, a thistle for Scotland and a shamrock representing Northern Ireland on the £2 Superb designs.
I don't pay much attention to modern coins but these I like! The design/artistry is night and day compared to what the U.S. Mint has been churning out lately. The only bit I'm not a huge fan of is the water splash around the salmon - looks a bit cartoonish.
Definitive coins feature standard designs, often used for decades. They are different to commemorative coins that often showcase one-year-only designs. Charlie had a hand in designing them himself.
Thanks. So definitive = regular issue. I just hadn’t heard the word used in a numismatic context before.
They look like the Irish animal coins minted from the 1920's to the 1960's. Ireland animal coin set from the 1950's
I too thought the segmented shield concept a bit too quirky for definitive denominations, though it would have been an OK concept for a one-year set, perhaps. These new ones are better.
