My 2003 Red Book lists a 2001 D&P American Buffalo Commemorative without a picture! If that's the right answer, how about someone posting a picture of the coin so we can all see what is unique about the mintmark?

Congratulations !! - you got the coin :D

Now I just need somebody to tell me what's special about the mint mark

It isn't that the MM is on a device instead of the field?

The mint mark is incuse, instead of in relief, isn't it? (I don't have one :( )

I think you may be right, ndgo. I thought maybe the Indian Head gold coins (2.5 and 5) had incuse mintmarks but based on pics I saw they do not.

The mintmark is on the reverse rather than the obverse?

Yes -- I just pulled mine out of the safe and inspected them. They do, indeed, have an incuse mint mark ("P" on the proof coin and "D" on the business strike).

Yup - it's the only time it's ever happened ;)

Nope. Here's one of my favorite examples of a coin with the MM on the reverse:

Good one GDJMSP!! :) Gives me one more reason to kick myself for not getting my order in for the Buffalo Dollar before they were sold out!!!

You will laugh your head off when you hear that I went out and got one after this exchange. I found it ironic as well.

Too bad I wasn't collecting when they came out, or I wouldn't have spent what I did. But $110 for a MS-69, not too shabby.

I was going to ask if they did that because the dates wore so easily when the same design was used on the five cent coin. But I guess since the dollar was not really intended to circulate, that probably doesn't matter...
