Here is what I believe is a provincial Decius, once again it is an unidentified hoard coin. I also have a really bad antoninianus from the same hoard that is green with traces of silver only on the lettering, however if you drop it on a tabletop it has that distinctive ring of a silver coin. Not really worth looking at - at the moment these are my only two Decius coins.

Here is the latter coin. Like I said, it is really bad and illustrative of the bad things that can happen to a silver coin that is only 35-40% fine.

I'm not sure about this being Trajan Decius. It looks more like Maximinus when I lighten the image. The reverse is a deity feeding a serpent I think and I cannot find a reverse like it for TD.

Oh thanks...hard to tell on these. When you look carefully at the antoninianus you can make out the letters DEC as you get towards the end of the legend, however, you certainly could be correct on the bronze piece!

    Nice catch @Mat
I think I have shown some of my TD recently, and won't start the Divi series thread again (I would be banned from CT in the end) but will only pile on with my syro-phenician tet of his

What I see as a chin could well be a beard like the coin @Cucumbor posted above. I'm probably all wet behind the ears though. When you look at the reverse, does it look as I described it with a serpent?

It looks like a deity feeding a serpent, pretty sure you are right, and the portrait probably is Maximinus. Thanks again for the input @Bing

I think that ringing endorsement of Alexandrian Tets just ensured I'll be buying a few more before the year is out. I need me some more of them ugly bully coins.

Here is my only Trajan Decius so far:

Beautiful coin, Mat! The patina is great and the eagle is awesome!

I believe it is a Deultum COL FL PAC DEVLT. I do not know whose it is or even have a meaningful guess.

I hope you don't mind that I'm hanging my post under this splendid series. I want to draw attention to this older thread, too. That one contains a link of Dougsmit to an impressive CNG list of Trajan Decius tetradrachm varieties.

I bought this Trajan Decius tetradrachm a short while ago. It's in excellent condition. It is one of the earliest issues of the new emperor, dating from the year 249. It has a different obverse text from the various Wildwinds tetradrachms: AYTOK K ΓAI ME KYIN ΔEKKIOC CEB. Autok(rator) K(aisar) Gai(us) Me(ssius) Quin(tus) Decius Seb(astes). The title Traianus, given to Decius by the Senate, is not yet present. Besides, his name is spelled with a double K, 'Deccius'. There are no dots under the portrait. I didn't see this variation in the CNG list. I believe this is Prieur 500 (but I don't have that book), a rarer variety. But I didn't know this when I bought the coin, I just liked it because of its condition.

And then I made a mistake, caused by me always confusing Trajanus Decius and Trebonianus Gallus. I bought another Antioch tetradrachm in less good condition, but still not bad. It came in today.

I have some doubts about the neck and chin of the portrait, what do you think of it? There's something under his chin. Is this coin o.k.?

While there's not much good to say about that band of roughness on the obverse, it is a nice style portrait and the version with Trajan in the legend missing on the other.

Happy to know that you like both coins. So I need not return the second tetradrachm to the seller.
