I would estimate the fair retail value of this list of coins to be between $5 and $10. Those 2 slabbing companies are known overgraders and it is unlikely that the coins are actually anywhere near as n ice as those slabs would indicate. The two proofs are worth a few dollars between them, the circulated silver dime is worth 90 cents, the 1964 quarter is worth $2.25, everything else is worth about its face value. Here is a general rubrick for the rest of the stuff you have in UNC or PNCS holders: All silver coins (dimes, quarters, and halves) from 1940-1964 are worth their melt value (about 8 to 9 times face at the moment). Proofs are worth a little bit, but from 1956 to the present, not more than about 10 times face value (with a few exceptions). And all coins 1965-date are worth less than 2 times face value. I hope this gives you a general idea of how you did on your purchase, and an idea of what to look for value-wise in your next purchase. By the way, thanks for not taking my earlier harshness as a personal attack, it sincerely was meant to be as honest as I could, I meant/mean no disrespect or personal insult.
Welcome to a place where you'll learn. And as already said, learn first of what your doing. Find out about coins, grading services, coin books and supplies, where to buy, where to find, etc. Long, long before you ever go to a place like ebay.
hey all, sorry been away for a day and couldn't reply. So here I have a question.... if these graders were overgraders and the value was used from PCGS or PGCS which ever it is, why do the coins I have by what the guy I bought from give me an est value of +17000 and were talking about nickles and dimes being the value of nickles and dimes. This is where I dont understand the little stuff.
andym129 - Can you answer a couple of questions for me please. Are all of these coins graded by this unccoins.com company or not ? And where and how did you come up with a value of $17,000 ?
yes... except the mississippi quarter... the guy who sold them to me used the PCGS price guide to come up with the number.... and unfortunately I cant... dont have a camera to post with.
Well, sadly then Andy I would have to say that whoever sold you those coins really took advantage of you. Were I you I would return them and ask for my money back. I rather doubt you'll get it, but at least try. Now, you need to realize, that even if all of the coins you bought were slabbed by PCGS and the grades were accurate - they still would not be worth $17,000 - no where near it.
then why does PGCS post on there website that some of these coins are worth 3000 4000 5000 dollars? Am I misreading these statements?
No you are not misreading them - they simply are not true. It is an advertising gimmick the company uses.
Andy, PCGS does list the 1963 1c MS67RD @ $2500, 1957-D 1c MS67RD @ $3700. But it looks as though these coins are not graded by PCGS. Which ones are graded by PCGS?
PCGS can be a little shady, I think. That unfortunate;y is the nature of the business when it comes to TPG's and on-line selles. But this "unccoins" company that I've never heard of. If they graded your coins, I'm pretty sure they graded them alot higher than they should be.
No PCGS is not a scam company - but their price guide is a joke. Even David Hall, the man who started the company, sells coins for far less than what that price guide says they are worth. If you want to know the true value of coins go to Heritage Coins, register as a member ( it's free ) and you can look up what coins actuall sell for in their Permanent Auction Archives. But the thing you have to remember is this - the coins you bought, they were slabbed and graded by, ( in your words ) a scam company. And that is why the coins you bought are worth a couple dollars each at best as was previously explained.
thats the thing nick, the coins werent graded by PGCS, the guy just used there prices. I didnt know that the UNC grading and the PGCS was a difference.... I thought it was like Topps baseball cards being listed in value by Becketts Baseball guide.... know what I mean? UGH this is fusterating
Oh man, than thats the problem. He used the highest price guide out there to price these coins in his ad. Now if you we're to have these graded by PCGS and they came back the same grades, then you would be a little better off. But like GDJMSP said, see if they have a return policy and maybe you can get your money back.
nope... it was a mix lot, I didnt even know the coins I was getting. Should I perhaps take them to PGCS and see what comes of it?
That would totally be up to you. You will have to join PCGS's club, which I think is $50 then you can submit any coins you want. But I honestly don't think they will come back the same grades, most likely lower. Thats why it would be cool to even get a scan of these coins.
