I received another Elagabalus Sestertius in the mail today to upgrade my old example. It is an early edition celebrating his victory over Macrinus and my first bronze in which I actually like the dark patina IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS PIVS AVG / VICTORIA ANTONINI AVG S C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of youthful Elagabalus to the right / Victory advancing right, holding wreath in raised right hand and palm over left shoulder Sestertius, Rome 218 RIC 377, Cohen 297, BMCRE 262, Sear 7582, Banti 51 Let´s see your Elagabali !
Very nice, love the patina and bust on that coin. A relative scarce issue as well. Can't help but notice the patina is not brass/yellow?
I don't have a sestertius but this is my chunkiest, not sure of the denomination. Elagabalus Region, City: Nikopolis ad Istrum Coin:? My favorite Elagabalus is this one. It's the last issue of an Antoninianus--a denomination introduced by Elagabalus' cousin-once-removed, Caracalla, in AD 215--until reintroduced by Balbinus in the "year of the six emperors," AD 238. that's a purdy sharp coin. i got a worn provincial 27mm As with zeus seated reverse. it also looks countermarked on the obverse.
The mint made coins as they were needed for circulation and the entire reign of Elagabalus was a down time for bronzes probably due to the huge number still circulating from the emperors of the 2nd century. This is a nice example of an Elegabalus sestertius. I do not have one.
Wow, JG + patina?!? Excellent, but you just blew your collecting domain wide open... so many more coins to want now. That must be a very early Elagabalus, @DUPONDII, because that's clearly a Macrinus portrait. Very cool. My only Elagabalus, struck 219-20:
Cool Sestertius @Julius Germanicus ! I only have one from the Monster: RI Elagabalus 218-222 CE AR Antoninianus Radiate Roma seated
Thanks everybody for your beautiful contributions!!!! I will take this one as an exception and stick to my old field otherwise or I will go bankrupt soon . You have a point there - I got my first Elagabalus Sestertius (pictured below) because it was brassy and affordable. On the other hand, it is also rusty and crusty which was OK then but started to bother me now that I try to raise my standards a little. I think there is a visible improvement in my collection with the OP coin despite it´s patina Wonderful Denarius! My second Sestertius of Elagabalus (seemingly one of his latest emissions) has a similar sacrifice scene on the reverse: IMP CAES M AVR ANTONINVS PIVS AVG / INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG S C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus right, seen from the front, wearing a short beard and a "horn" / Elagabalus, in priestly robes, standing left, holding club in left arm and patera in right hand, sacrificing out of patera over lighted and garlanded altar, with sacrificial bull lying behind base of altar Sestertius, Rome 221/22 RIC 350, Cohen 64, BMCRE 350 var., Sear 7564, Banti 9 var.
