Brutal!! (wow, I'm glad that I bought my example when I did!!) ... man, I don't even like that Stephen Album example very much (ummm although, the croc/reverse is pretty cool, with the desert patina and all ... but still!!)

=> that's "twice" as much as my coin!! (it's not that nice!!) ... to me, anyway

TIF => I have faith that your croc will be along soon!! (good hunting, coin sister)

By my grading standards this suffers only from the textured surface. I would not pay over estimate for it as it sits but a good surface on this but otherwise as it is would be a very nice example. Does a poor surface drop a $1000 coin to $500 or $100? The new owner of this coin and I disagree on that matter.

To my mind the hammered prices of auctions so far this year seem to be on the high side. Is this a seasonal thing? Did everyone have their ammunition reloaded?

With some patience and discipline you can occasionally score some nice bargains at auctions, but there's obviously also the danger of getting emotionally invested in an item you had already bid on and not want to have it get away from you, even if it has already exceeded your 'max price'. At that point, you may forget there are 10 (or 50) other examples of the same coin on Vcoins or wherever, some of which you would have been happier paying the same or lower price for.
