Maybe this will be the year new mint issues will top the $20,000 level for purchase price. Quite a few years ago I tried to commit to buying all the new mint coins issued in a years time. That was a very short lived commitment! :desk:

I'm glad they are making all these changes, it would have been nice though if they put the changes on the obverse instead of the reverse. I think either way it will make the set much more collectable. Perhaps after the five years they stop making these coins and then you will see the prices zoom higher.

I think its a rather stupid idea to continue minting Sacs while at the same time minting and distributing the DedPrez Dollars, four different per year. The U.S. Mint, in all of its wonderous glory, still has millions of dollars in Sacs in storage, $100 million to be closer to the truth. Tell your Congressman or woman that you want to "Kill the Bill" and rid us of the $1 dollar currency. Thats the only way that the dollar coin will thrive.

You have to feel sorry for the Mint. Everytime someone in the House or Senate comes up with a stupid
idea, or even worse manages to actually pass it into law, it's the Mint that gets the blame for it.

And even worse is when the collectors who should know better about how coins are legislated into existance are the ones blaming the wrong people.

How times change! I can remember back less than 10 years ago when all collectors did was complain that the current mint offerings were stale, putting out the same old stuff we had seen for decades and when were they going to finally start offering something new. Now a mere decade later eveyone is starting to complain that there are just too many new coins and designs being offered. I may not like all the new designs but I do enjoy the hunt for them. 10 years ago you collected your cent, nickel, dime, quarter and half and by mid March or April you had them all and the rest of the year was spent looking for older coins and complaining about all the boring designs or just losing intrest until the next year. . I don't bother with the Mints gold coins but as far as the "circulation" strikes go, bring it on, gimme all you can make. Lets see, this year I need to get cents, nicks, dimes, 5 qtrs, halves, 5 dollars. With P&D mints that's 28 coins I get to look for this year instead of 10. Throw in a few varietys and errors and that number goes above 30. That's 20+ more "hunts" I get to go on and should keep me busy and interested most of the year. As far as I'm concerened I'd like to see 5 of every denomination released every year. I'm a 30+ year coin collector, and I have already completed most of the older coin sets, so give me all this new stuff to collect, keep me interested. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm complaing but I can't really understand why a Coin Collector would be upset that they're introducing new coins. I've never heard a stamp collector complain that there was a new stamp coming out or a sports card collector get upset over a new team coming out. Maybe it's just me, but I like all the new stuff, gimme more in fact. Collect what you want and don't worry about the rest. Gotta run, my new Washington dollars just arrived via mail and I need to go check them out. 2 down, 28 to go!

Sacagawea & Presidential $1s....UGLY ! Why can't people make beautiful coins nowdays ? Like the Athenian new style tetradrachm, or the Elizabeth 1st of England gold Sovereign, or even the st gaudens double eagle ????

Really...they should not be allowed to circulate !

i must say the presidential dollar is by far the uglyest us coin i have ever seen but i really like the sacs there toneing is what makes them ugly i think if they had a different metal that dosent tarnish like magnezum i think people would like the sacs a little better then they do now

The Sacagawea IS a beautiful coin! I particularly like the Native American mother and child
motif by GG, and the flying eagle is very classy on the reverse, somewhat similar to the Standing
Liberty 1/4. The new reverses proposed could also be very classy - how about an eagle flying
over a pueblo, or a kiva, or a peace pipe.

I am sure you have never seen a stamp collector selling his collection and when dealer offers them only 70% of face value. And for sports cards, I have seen dealers who offer to buy by the pound.

As a collector, probably this is the worst nightmare one can have. And one more thing, this happened in this hobby too, if you dare to look outside US coin market. There are plenty of examples where a proof/mint set is being priced for a fraction of their issue price. And it happens when supply is more then demand.

I wanted to copy the icon here which Roy uses "You got that right!" :)

Here you go. Just remove the "X"s, then copy and paste this:

Aidan - I did not need your help to post a link that I have used scores of times!

As you would have known had you bothered to read ballabh's posting, I deliberately posted a broken link so that he could see the link, not the result. How does your post serve any purpose?

Out of curiosity, what are some of the best (or should I say worst!) examples of this that you can think of?

Now we have the worse of both worlds. We have the basic old protraits on coinage and the silly Presidential Coin with ugly portraits.

You haven't talked to too many old time stamp and sportscard collectors have you? Of course first you have to find them because most of them have quit their hobbies in disgust. I HAVE heard such complaints.

One doesn't even need to look outside the U.S. market to find examples. Check out 80's proof sets - most trade near or below issue price. A few extreme cases are listed below:

Date, Issue price, Red Book current price:
    1982-S $11 $7
    1983-S $11 $8
    1984-S Prestige $59 $32
    1987-S $11 $7
    1987-S Prestige $45 $36

Actually, there is Roy, The one cent piece is called a "penny." It's sort of like the five cent piece being called a "nickel."

Why don't you complain about people calling nickels nickels?

I guess it would depend on whether you collect coins with the pretense of selling it at a later time for a profit, which to me is investing and not collecting or whether you collect the pure fun and enjoyment of it. Trying to complete that certain set or type or whatever is what collecting is about. If you start worring about the value of everything all the time, then your collection is becoming a buisness and no longer a hobby. I'll let the dealers worry about whether or not to stock boxes of certain coins and let them worry whether the value has changed from day to day. Me, I just want those holes filled and once a coin goes into my collection it becomes part of the whole and is no longer an individual.

And don't forget, prices work both ways.
1997 p/d mint set issue price- $8.00 current value- $39.00
    1999 silver proof set ip-$32.00 - cv- $380.00
    1970 mint set ip-$2.50 ($1.27 minus face value!) - cv $25.00
You win some you lose some but it should all average out in the end.....in fact if you bought every mint set since 1970 at issue price you would have spent @300.00 (not accounting for the face values) and they are currently valed at @575. if you sold them for 70% of value - @$400 you would still see a profit of @$100.

I'm not trying to start anything, just trying to point out that views differ between those "collecting" for profit and those collecting for collecting sakes and whether your more concerned with the individual coin or the whole collection. But I will agree on one thing, if I was collecting for profit I'd stay away from any large qtys of any of these newer issues and focus more on errors, keys and semi-keys. Errors seem to always appreciate and keys/semis rarely if ever go down.

To each his own, in his own way and for his own reasons.
