Got an offer accepted that I sent to a dealer earlier today for this extremely rare Mark Antony provincial. There is only 6 known specimens according to RPC ( https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/1/4494 ). The specimen I bought is in quite good condition judging from the sellers photos, so I'm very happy. PHOENICIA, Marathus. Mark Antony. Æ. Dated CY 223 (37/6 BC). Obverse: Bare head of Antony right. Reverse: Bull reclining left on ground line; ϹΚΓ Μ (below), ΙΑΝ and kof (above). Reference: RPC I 4494.
@Michael Stolt, you're about to make a (recovering ...?) English major say, "Awesome!!!" There. I did it. Not so hard after all. ...AWESOME!!! AWESOME!!!
@Michael Stolt....Super coin!....The portrait is recognisable and the reverse has nice detail......Congrats on a rare coin......You'll probably find it's even better in hand..
Got to second @Spaniard. Spend enough time squinting at indifferent pictures (maybe including one's own), you get a 'nose' for this. This one has great potential to be only better in person.
Same here, also the light is not the best on the dealer photo, even had to edit it a little before posting to make the coin more visible. I think it will be far better in hand, all other types are 20mm so expect this one to be too. Small coins tend to look worse at times when magnified by a photo.
This strikes me as a coin we would all want for our collections even if it were as common as a Tribute Penny. Being rare only adds to the appeal from its style, design, being year dated and link to history. Congratulations.
Thanks Doug! For me that specializes in Antony's eastern Bronzes this is quite a score. I'm very happy.
