I looked at Larry's example yesterday, good looking slab and hopefully the new plastic will do its advertised job regarding scratches and viewing clarity. But from day one every slab that the TPGs have produced were claimed to be non reproducible - in other words they couldn't be faked. And for many years they did their job and none were faked. But in years that all changed, I can still remember the first time someone accomplished it with ANACS, and then ICG, and then NGC, and then PCGS. And eventually they'll be faking these too. No matter what they (the TPGs) do there will still be fakes. And there is 1 and only 1 way to combat the problem and protect yourself from it. And that is to only buy coins from trusted and respected dealers - and nobody else ! That will never change !
At the PCGS lunch yesterday, Don Willis said that someone in CA. was cutting slabs and coins in half and making stuff. He said the FBI was looking into it. It's really crazy out there. As Doug said, trust your dealer.
Anything, and everything, can be counterfeited, which is there always changes to our currency to prevent counterfeiting. Thing is, for every change to prevent counterfeiting, the counterfeiters always find a way to beat it.
