Bought a few months ago but finally got around to taking pix. I've long wanted a piece of N.O. gold for my collection; they made a bunch of these but I'm sure many were melted. Comments welcome and feel free to guess the assigned grade , if you like. (smudge over D on rev is on the slab)
From Winter's book (2nd ed.) on NO gold: ... the (striking) quality improved dramatically in 1851. The center is fairly sharply struck with good hair detail, with the exception of the curls around the face which are not fully struck. The reverse is usually sharp except for the eagle's right leg feathers which are often weak.
My opinion? Technical (sheldon) grade is irrelevant, the eye appeal is off the charts! Congrats on acquiring a wonderful piece of numismatic history!!!
Here's the assigned grade and 3d party opinion: Thanks to all who guessed, and for your opinions. It's a fun coin to look at in various angles of light.
