Mel Wacks has been producing counter struck coins to commemorate certain evens since 1976. Some of his work, such as the 1978 Camp David Peace Summit struck over a Peace Dollar, is highly sought after. Usually commanding $300 or more dollar depending upon grade. Others, due to limited production, are highly collectible such as the 1976 Turkey Half Dollar from 1976. The above coin was in response to the success of the Viking 1 landing on Mars commemorative in 1976. Basically, Mel produced commemoratives for what the Treasury Department did not commemorating important events in this country and the world. Here's a List: MW1 “VIKING I ON MARS JULY 20, 1976” MW2 Turkey (Thanksgiving 1976) MW3 “CAMP DAVID PEACE SUMMIT SEPT. 5-17, 1978” MW4 “INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF THE CHILD 1979” MW5ERROR “POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS MEXICO JAN. 26-31, 1979” MW6 “POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS MEXICO JAN. 26-31, 1979” MW7 “ADV. IONNES PAVLVS P.M. USA OCT. 1-7, 1979” MW8 “BICENTALER 1780-1980” MW9 “CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS/1980 MOSCOW GAMES” MW10 “FASTER ● HIGHER ● STRONGER LAKE PLACID ● FEB. 13-24, 1980” MW11 “1980 GOLD MEDAL WINNERS ● USA HOCKEY TEAM” MW12 “RONALD W. REAGAN INAUGURATED 40TH PRESIDENT JANUARY 20, 1981” MW13 “FREEDOM FOR THE 52 AMERICAN HOSTAGES JANUARY 20, 1981” MW14 “PRINCE CHARLES & LADY DIANA 7•29 1981” MW15 “SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR EQUAL JUSTICE UNDER LAW 1981” MW16 “POPE JOHN PAUL II VISITS ENGLAND 1982” MW17 “GEORGE WASHINGTON FEB. 22, 1732-1982” MW18 “LOS ANGELES GAMES ● SUMMER 1984” (Olympic Runners) MW19 “1984 LOS ANGELES ● SUMMER GAMES” (Olympic Weightlifter) MW20 “LOS ANGELES SUMMER GAMES XXIII ● ‘84” (Olympic Flame) MW21 “HARRY S. TRUMAN CENTENNIAL MAY 8, 1884 ● 1984” Most I have, and some I do not such as the BiCentaler which was counter struck over am overstruck Maria Theresa Taler which are quite popular. My first experience with Mel Wacks works with the high prices folks were paying for the Camp David coin. After that, a bunch of them were produced on Eisenhower Dollars both CnClad and Silver Coins. My hopes were to land one which was done over a Doubled Die Ike but I never did find one. Mels work has a place in numismatic history along the lines of exonumia in that each piece was struck on an existing coin. I'm faily excited about this new piece since I'd assumed that Mel had retired from the over struck business but evidently he felt that the Pope's visit in September was important enough to draw him out of retirement. (Pure Speculation) At any rate, that's who Mel Wacks is despite the efforts of a lot of you in trying to be cute or funny or even clever. A simple google search would reveal who he really is since he's not really a stranger to coin collectors that have been around for any period of time.
