What does everyone like about this design? To me they might as well put a stop sign on the back. What happened to the beautiful artistic designs of old, like highly detailed eagles or a beautifully engraved lady liberty.

I loved the old designs on the "first lady" gold (and bronze medal) pieces of the single and widower presidents, and am looking forward to the up and coming designs of both the small cents and the last of the first lady old designs. I like it too !!

I agree, I find all the modern coins boring and not too lovely to look at. I liked the eagle version out of the finals, too bad it wasnt used.

I'm not crazy about it, either. It seems that most here like it, but not me. Maybe it'll look better when I get my hands on one. I hope so!!

    Lackluster,

I don't know about anybody else, but for me, the shield design is clean, has a modern look, and there is a lot of field space. Just my two cents, though....

It's okay. I'll keep my opinion short, cause I don't want to ruin the enthusiasm.
I guess I was just very much looking forward to the eagle.I can already imagine somebody's plans to have the shield colorized red and white like a barbershop.

Maybe it will grow on me after seeing it on some copper.

It's more interesting than the boring flag design, but all in all not that interesting. I have to give them some credit for going with a classic design for the first time in decades. I kind of liked the modernized wheat stalks in the ring. But, I can live with this. It's still a win for collectors.

If that's what they're going with for the next 20-30 years, the 2009 LPs just got a WHOLE LOT more interesting, wouldn't you guys say!? And should remain very collectible in high grades. I think I might start buying some rolls.

I agree, very simple and classic. I also liked the other shield design with the wreaths around the shield. Very elegant.

Not bad; now how about cleaning up some of our other coins, start with taking the presidents off the front, revert to some of the classic lady liberty designs.....and while they're at it, how about a new revese for the nickel. Buildings just don't do it for me......just my opinion.

How about a new obverse for the nickel? The new Jefferson portrait is a caricature...

my thoughts exactly. There were better designs, but I could live with this one just fine.

I can really admire the oak wreath on the back of the Indian Head cent or Flying Eagle cent.

THAT's the way I would do it.

Unfortunately, the mint and these committees don't like classic design. They like using computer-generated stuff (which is why modern commemoratives lack soul). The shield is better than the junk flat flag decal they were going to paste on the back.

ONE thing I admire about the OD (original design) for the cent reverse was the typography: the type style and layout of the words between the wheat sheaves.

It would be interesting to me to find out why the mint so loves its current design style---it just may be that the mint wants flatter and flatter images due to the requirements of pressing millions of coin pieces.

yikes! what happen to the Eagle??? I guess the shield is the closest finalist to the hammer and sickle...

If you didn't get what I mean I hate any and all the shield designs and especially the finalist since it was picked.

I guess it's better to show Liberty with a shield then actually with Lady Liberty or an Eagle.

Well when you take highly detailed eagles, or beautifully engraved Liberty's, squash them flat with no relief and shrink them down to fit on a 19 mm coin. they come out looking pretty bad. For todays high speed coinage requirements simple but bold designs work better.

It's interesting. The general concensus here seems to be that the new design is pretty good. On the NGC and Coin Community Forums it was pretty much universally panned.

As I mentioned on the Coin Community Forum, what this coin really looks like is a civil war token. The reverse design is very similar to some patriotic dies. numbers 191 - 194, 342, and 343.
