I haven’t got any coins from Judaea but picked up these four interesting ones for $37(seemed like a fair price). This was also my first use of Vcoins and it was easier than expected. Feel free to post any coins from the Holyland below!
Can't find any pictures of the couple of them I have, but you've got a Heck of an impressive range! ...Less than $10 each, Attributed? Get Outta Town!!!
Judean coins are not my specialty or interest but FFIVN and I have a few in our collection. I bought them from a dealer who specializes in them and I believe has written a book or two on them. Actually, we have the same 4 coins that you do haha. Except our Porcius Festus is not as nice as yours. I also probably paid too much for ours. Oh well... Here they are: Herod Archelaus AE Prutah Obverse: HΡωΔOY, bunch of grapes on vine with small leaf on left Reverse: EΘNAΡXOY, tall helmet with crest & cheek straps, viewed from front, caduceus below. Herod Agrippa I AD 37-43 And Pontius Pilate, Roman Procurator Obverse: Fringed parasol Reverse: Three grain ears Judaea, First Revolt AE Prutah Year 2 = 67-8 AD Obverse: Hebrew legend "Shenath Shethaim" (Year Two) around amphora with wide rim and two handles Reverse: Hebrew legend "Cheruth Zion" (Freedom of Zion) around vine leaf with small branch and tendril
Nice additions, @Nathan F! @furryfrog02 posted examples or three of your four new coins. Here's another example of your fourth one, Festus: Porcius Festus, procurator of Judea under Nero, 59-62 AD, bronze prutah of 14.9 mm, 2.21 grams. Obverse: NEP WNO C (of Nero) within wreath tied at bottom with X. Reverse: LE KAICAPOC (year 5 = 58/59 AD, of Caesar), palm branch. Reference: Hendin 1351.
I have several of these types, but had a photo of only the one posted above - so I took cell phone pics of another that has clearer lettering as another example to share: Porcius Festus, procurator of Judea under Nero, 59-62 AD, bronze prutah. Obverse: NEP WNO C (of Nero) within wreath tied at bottom with X. Reverse: LE KAICAPOC (year 5 = 58/59 AD, of Caesar), palm branch. Reference: Hendin 1351.
Nice coins and price is a good deal: @Deacon Ray is the expert here on these I believe. He has quite the collection.
I have had many first revolt prutahs but I give them to young people at their bar or bat mitzvahs so I only have a couple at any time. This one is an irregular one from year 2.
Yes, @Nathan F. The date, located bottom left of the palm frond on the reverse, cannot be seen on your coin- however, it doesn't matter since this is the only coin type of Festus and was issued in year 5 ("LE") of Nero's reign, 58/59. (Nero reigned from 54-68 AD.)
