I'm thinking the obverse looks 66 and the reverse looks 64. Great coin.

    This one only graded 63.

She graded MS-63 PCGS with a CAC green bean , In hand she's a little lighter , and the only thing I can see to bring her down is the rub on the workers hair , I'd of given her a 66/64 . Can anyone tell me if the tpgs lower the grade if the toning is black ?

    R, Looking at the photos, that's a heck of a 63!

As for your question on dark toning, in my opinion, PCGS doesn't like it. The challenge with dark (brown/black) toning is that often luster is muted as a result, and that's when (in my opinion) that PCGS is tough on coins. FWIW, I have a PCGS 64 CAC that is much darker than your coin, but I don't recall many Isabellas in 65+ that are dark like mine. But neither is this a series that I follow as closely as some...

Perhaps someone like Mark Feld (or someone else with similar experience) can comment as I'm sure he's seen many more examples of Isabellas than I have.

    Take care...Mike

This is not my specialty, but I just do not get 63. Anyone who can compare your coin to the one ldhair posted and say they are the same grade, please explain it to me.

Not really the explanation you're looking for, nor anything you don't know already, but let's remember that photos can (and do) make a coin look very different grade-wise.

I'll say one thing. After seeing Idhair's resized photos I began to question my original grade. Have to say that by those photos I would o' said "65". Nothing beats seeing the coin in hand though.....:) Again, nice coin Rusty and that little green bean makes the pickup all the more sweeter.

Oh! I get that real well, but even allowing for best/worst case with the pictures, I cannot come to the conclusion that they are the same grade.

In hand there are no hidden marks , when I got her I must of looked at her for a good half hour , and about twenty more times wondering why she didn't grade higher , the only real flaws were the rub in the working ladies hair , or maybe they just don't like the dark black toning . She's definately one of my favorites now .

One thing is for sure. It's a really cool coin.
I like the dark edges but don't have a clue how PCGS looks at it.
