it acid tests with 18k as being positive for silver content. I don’t use the brown acid so I don’t know purity. It weighs approx 18g which I have read is light but that can also depend on the individual coin. I poked around a bit but I’m not very familiar with coins so I couldn’t come up with much. Any help is very much appreciated. thank you
It looks like an 8 reales cob, or a "piece of eight", that may very well be genuine. While there are likely counterfeits of 8 real cobs, oddly-shaped ones are more likely to be genuine due to the harsh minting process of the day. Here is one more thing: if you come across one that looks like it has dull luster but considerable wear and an antiqued look, it is likely a counterfeit.
Hi and welcome to CoinTalk. Looks legit to me. BTW the General Discussion forum is for non-coin related topics such as "What is your favorite song?"
No worries about it...... Just message a mod in this thread like @lordmarcovan and ask to have it moved to maybe the world coins section or the whats it worth section. There should also be a list of any mods here right now on the front page. You can substitute them for the mod I suggested... Welcome!!!
My very first post on this forum was about a Cobb I picked up on the South Carolina coast after hurricane Hugo came to visit. I sent a photo of my Cobb to Daniel Sedwick at sedwickcoins.com and he promptly responded and gave me a full rundown on the piece. Welcome to CoinTalk.
