Goes to show ya how difficult it is to accurately grade a coin from images no matter how good they are. Nice Morgan!
DOES this lighting angle give you any help and/or does it change your mind on your thoughts on the grade
I do not believe its the gouge in the cheek that Details this coin but the long scratch going through the cheek into the hair and well into the cap. I think another grading company may let this go through but not PCGS.
Oh wait... I took Thomas' response as saying my guess was correct. A little premature celebration. Yeah... the scratch wasn’t visible originally.
Sooooo, my 60 was closer than any one else? That's a little tricky there, asking us to grade a coin that you already knew was "not gradable", however, if we expect to be considered good at grading, then there is no reason why any of us couldn't have said the same thing. Good looking coin, even as is. I hope you got a great deal on it.
“Details” because of the scratch is a bit harsh, but the hairlines behind the head are a bit concerning.
Reminds me of this dollar in my collection. It is a very pretty coin, but there are a few extremely light patches of hairlines that are indicative of a “touch-up” cleaning.
And I thought your post (#19) was the answer. I guess we confused each other. I should have noticed your post wasn't from the OP. lol
May break out and take pictures - perhaps the plastic is hiding something ? AS a Collector I bought the coin and not the plastic so in the long run it really doesn't matter. You see what I see … A NICE COIN
Yeah I meant that the coin looks a little lifeless, as if some of the luster was dipped away. It looks a little on the dull side without showing any wear.
That is the result of the lighting (especially the full-slab pic). It is as brilliant as any natural Morgan I have seen.
Proves what a slight tilt in coin or adjustment in light can “hide” in a pic. Is there maybe a wheelmark across the chin/jaw in the direction of that scratch?
