I am very disappointed in the first two medals of the series. It does not look as though any thought was given to the design of the series nor of a reason for issuing them starting now. We have seen the Geo. Washington obverse a hundred times before, most obviously from the quarter, an undraped Grecian style bust. John Adams is clothed in his obverse and the bust almost appears cartoonish. The date on Adams' medal uses A.D. as if collectors might confuse him with the Mesopotamian John Adams circa 1800 B.C.E. The "United States of America" lettering is in a different style on each medal, interrupted by the bust vs a continuous arc. And finally the reverse is totally uninspired. The Indian Peace Medal (handshake/peace pipe) image was last seen on the Lewis & Clark Journey of Discovery nickels in 2004 and doesn't represent any president except maybe Jefferson (he designed it). At least the mint could have used an image of the presidential seal like the reverse of the JFK half if they were too cheap to design a new image. That image (or variations of it) has represented the office of the president since at least 1850. Simplified versions were used to impress sealing wax on official presidential documents sent to congress prior to 1850.

In summary, I will not be buying poorly designed, ill-conceived silver rounds at twice market value.

Does anyone know if there was any enabling legislation authorizing the issuance of these medals?

DWSchmidt
In summary, I will not be buying poorly designed, ill-conceived silver rounds at twice market value. Does anyone know if there was any enabling legislation authorizing the issuance of these medals?
