My first new addition to my Gallienus Zoo series coins in quite some time arrived today: a centaur facing right, with bow and arrow, to go with the centaur facing left I already had (see photo above). It's also the first coin I've ever bought from a dealer in Sweden! Not that I should really find that so unusual. After all, the Romans got a lot closer to Sweden than they did to New York City. I hadn't seen one of these in such good condition available in a while, so I bought it as soon as I noticed it. Gallienus, Billon Antoninianus, 267-268 AD, Rome Mint (7th Officina). Obv. Radiate head right, GALLIENVS AVG / Rev. Purchased Jan. 2022 from Ingemar Wallin Utveckling AB, Uppsala, Sweden.
Great coin Donna! I think what I like about these coins so much is that they show animals (obviously) but are a diverse series that can be captured at a reasonable cost and the hunt to find ever better examples could keep a collector busy forever. Here’s my Centaur of a different type with rudder and globe!
