Sorry I missed the deadline for the contest but thought I would share this anyways!

The look on a guy's face when I told him what some of his' coins were worth! See, this gentleman I think from Michigan comes up to my table at the Flea Market in Tennessee and asked if I could give him an idea what a few of his' coins were worth. He stated that his next door neighbor (an elderly gentleman) came to him and offered to sell his' coin collection as he was moving to Florida in his old age and needed the money. The neighbor showed him the coins and told him what he wanted for them and this gentleman purchased the coin collection even though he did not know anytning about coins and what they were worth. He stated that he trusted his neighbor which had lived next door for some 30 years or more, had always wanted to collect coins and figured that it must be a good deal and since he had the money, he went ahead and purchased the collection.

The gentleman did not have the coins with him, so I asked the gentleman if he could remember what some of them were and the dates. Now, since it has been quite awhile back when this happened, I can't remember what they actually were but I remember being blown away by just the three coins that he stated that he received in the collection. All three were rare and the least valuable of the three started out at $15,000 in G-4 in the Coin Values Magazine. That was only three coins out of the collection with a total value at around $50,000 in just G-4 condition alone and he stated that all of the coins in the collection were in really great shape. In my book, that correlates from F-12 to EF-45 or maybe even to AU/BU!

I just remember the look on the gentleman's face when I told him that the least valuable of the three was worth $15,000 in G-4 condition alone and that the values go up significantly from there in higher grades! He got so nervous and figity and I knew that he had left home on vacation without placing the coins in a Safe Deposit Box at his Bank, could not wait to get home to make sure they had not been stolen and to get them to the Bank.

He stated that he would probably contact me the next time he comes down as he wants me to give him an idea as to what the coins are worth and that he may have me arrange the sell of some of the coins. Talking about figity, I can only dream of ever owning even one of the three coins and just the thought of holding and possibly arranging the sell of the three and maybe other rare coins in the collection, really got me nervous!

Okay, you have all of us curious: what were the three coins?
    Huh? Huh? Huh?
    Nice story.

    Treashunt,

I am sorry but I really don't remember! All that I can remember is, that one or two of them were some of the earliest U.S. Gold coins ever produced (maybe a $10 Gold) and one was one of the earliest U.S. Silver Dollars ever produced. I vaguely remember that two were from the late 1790's and one was around 1801. That's all that I can remember! I am hoping that the gentleman will contact me and if so, I will give you all an update if an when I get to look at the coins. Hopefully they are genuine and I am sure that I stated as much to the gentleman.

After looking at the latest issue of my Coin Values Magazine, I misquoted the lowest grades as the early Gold Coins start a Fine in the magazine. However, I may have been quoting from the Redbook as well! I just don't really remember!

When I was 6 my dad showed me his collection for the first time and that really got me interested, especially when he showed me his MS-63 Quarter eagle from 1905!! Collecting is so fun

Several years ago I was at a swap meet in Canada, and saw nothing of interest there until I ran across a vendor that had alittle bit of everything for sale. I noticed a small tupperware bowl with probably 50 foriegn coins in it. I began looking through it and found an 1851 O three cent silver. This is not a series I am too familiar with, but I knew the Canadian seller either didnt know what was in the bowl or just classified it as foriegn. He was asking .15 each. I offered him $10 for the whole bowl. He accepted and I did some reading about my new find and sent it in to PCGS. It came back AU-55 and has since been sold for $210. By far a great experience
