OK - let's be blunt - today PCI is at the bottom of the heap with quite a few of the others. I would not recommend buying coins in their slabs except at a substantial - and I do mean substantial - discount for the grade. However - there once was a time when a coin graded by PCI was every bit the equal of a coin graded by NGC or PCGS. And sometimes - they were more than equal - in other words NGC & PCGS would actually upgrade them. But those days are long past. Every now and then a coin in one of the old PCI slabs can be found and these coins are graded correctly. But it is rare to find one now as experienced collectors and dealers are well aware of this and have been for years - so these coins are purchased in a hurry. Now let me say this - again - if you really know what you are doing - by that I mean you know how to grade correctly and accurately - you can from time to time find a correctly graded coin in any slab. It's just not easy to do so.
Coin grading I would seriously doubt that any of us, if few are able to properly grade most coins. Today technology has taken over the grading of coins with equipment and tools that we don't have. BWJR
I disagree. Coins are still graded by humans at all of the services. I'd pit my grading skills against anyone at PCGS or NGC or any of the others. I've been doing it longer than many of them, anyway. We all have the same tools and technology that they use...it's called a loupe. Of course in some instances they may have to use a microscope...but I think a fair number of regulars here have that tool also. I was recently told that all major services still use "naked eye" grading but I'm not sure to what extent that may be true. With time and effort, anyone can learn to grade coins. It's like anything else in life. The more you do it the better you get at it. Nick
is PCI the grading company that is used for all the shop at home stuff? I like the guy on that show... 'folks! we've only done this one time before, and it sold out in a matter of minutes! people have been calling me for months asking when we were going to offer it again... Here it is! <junk>'
Thankfully for us, eBay has cleaned up and is now a safe palace to purchase coins. Lol...some things never change.
Geeez John - was there a cave-in or something and you fell into this deep, deep hole where you found these posts carved on the walls or something ?
