Denly's of Boston had a large number of New Jersey notes, and other dealers had some nice ones as well. The Winslow, NJ 3 Cent note is listed in Wait as W-2467, but of course isn't in Haxby because he doesn't list private scrip. I think I did pretty good on the price. It fell about mid-way between the estimated values of this one found in several auctions I checked out. Hay & Company (Winslow Glass-Works) was founded in 1831 by Andrew K. Hay and a local businessman named Coffin. In 1851 his nephew John B. Hay joined the firm and it became Hay & Company. Andrew died in 1881, and the company was operated by John until 1884 when he retired. After John Hay's retirement the Tillyer Brothers from Philadelphia leased the property and continued production. The company's main products included window glass, fruit jars, and hollow ware. They also issued 1, 5, 10, and 25 Cent, and 1$ and 5$ scrip paid to their workers in lieu of "hard" money. Their workers were housed in about 100 tenements located on the plant's property.

The Torrey note is the second denomination I have in my collection. I bought a 5$ note a short while back, and posted it on CT. The Torreys were furnace operators in Manchester Twp. (Lakehurst) in the 1860's and 1870's. I now have the 25 Cent note but still need a 5, 10, and 50 Cent, and 1$, 2$, 3$, and a second variety of the 5$ scrip to complete my set. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to complete the series, but I'll have a lot of fun trying. Thanks for looking everybody.

Bruce[/QUOTE]
