I posted these two in my "pending arrivals" thread a while back, but I'm sharing them again with my own photos. First I have this amazing club series denarius, most likely the finest known specimen out on the market. The toning is much darker than in the NAC photos, so I am definitely hoping for a hidden provenance somewhere. Anonymous. 208 BC. AR Denarius (19mm 4.46 g). Mint in southeast Italy. Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) to left. Reverse: The Dioscuri, each holding spear, on horseback right; two stars above; club below horses; ROMA in exergue. Reference: Crawford 89/2. I then also received this gorgeous Æ minted by Mark Antony in Marathus. It is extremely rare with only 7 specimens cited by RPC, out of those 5 are in museums. This one is the finest known and will most likely be the plate coin in the upcoming second edition of RPC I (https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/1/4494). PHOENICIA, Marathus. Mark Antony. Æ (20mm 9.09 g). Dated CY 223 (37/6 BC). Obverse: Bare head of Antony right. Reverse: Bull reclining left on ground line; ϹΚΓ Μ (below), ΙΑΝ and kof (above). Reference: RPC I 4494.
Both coins are fantastic. The Anthony is an exceptional rarity and the denarius is simply gorgeous. Currently, the only NAC coin I have is an aureus, but I’m expecting my 1st AR from them in the mail. My aureus also appeared darker IRL than it did in the NAC photo, so I’m assuming it would be the same for my siliqua. I find that NAC brightens/over exposes their photographs.
Thank you! This was actually my first ever NAC win, I've bid in quite a few of their past auctions but never won anything.
