@Inspector43 Congrats on your listings! I think Wildwinds is a great resource for collectors. The idea that it is “crowd-funded” by collectors is fantastic too. Think about it: if you are a serious collector of any sort of ancients and find a variety or an unlisted type, you can add it to the database and contribute to the knowledge base of collectors worldwide, all without having to be an academic or publish a book. Whether collecting gold or lrbs you can actively move our hobby forward. Pretty cool.
I have two coins listed on Wildwinds , the Drusus I added it myself two years ago , but the Trajan I have no idea how it got there. I bought the coin at a local coin show , at home when I tried to print a label for the coin I was surprised to see that my coin is the one listed on Wildwinds http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/nero_claudius_drusus/RIC_0093var.jpg http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/trajan/RIC_0476_As.jpg The seller told me that he cleaned a little bit the coin,... the patina had a green tint in the Wildwinds picture , now is black.
I believe I have a few coins that are not in Wildwinds. I have tried looking them up, but no luck - I sometimes have a little trouble with her database search. Many are from within in my collecting niches (Etruria, Carthage, Italia, etc.), so I "get" it that they may not be in her database. Should I offer pics and info on my coins for Wildwinds to review? How would I do that? Would they be interested?
@Alegandron I would certainly send Dane an email. Now it might be a bit before you get a response simply because she is busy and a lot of people write to her. But she is never rude and typically happy to add things that are not on WW. I think especially when you are talking about specialty areas. No one has time to chase down every area of collecting. I don’t send coins with different officina marks for submission unless they are not listed in RIC, for example, just to not be a pesty nit. When I find something interesting though, Dane has always been tremendously helpful, enthusiastic and happy to share references or anything she has access to that is pertinent.
Thank you. I only hope that the coins of mine that I could not find, was not because I was not using the database search function correctly. However, I have found many other of my coins, and use WW as a great reference. I may have over a dozen coins that I could not find. I also have a few that only a few are known. My coins would not be from the Roman Empire period from after Augustus, so officina marks, etc. would not be a bother. Thank you for the helpful comments!
The information added would need to up to date-as far as it can be-and accurate. The bug bears of all true researchers. Once on Wildwinds (etc) who refreshes/alters the details, they seem immutable to me - as my 2 posts above show.
I currently have 16 of my coins on Wildwinds. Dane does a lot of hard work to update and maintain the site. She is performing a service for the entire ancients collecting community.
@Orfew I concur. I always suggest an email if an error or omission is noted. @NewStyleKing Maybe an email would correct the issue with your coin?
