I'm looking at the coin right now and can't tell what scratches you're referring to. There are almost none, and what few there are are very minor ones only in the field. I can only assume the pictures posted here make it look worse than it actually is? I don't know what method was used when the picture was taken; perhaps it was still in a flip or plastic case of some kind that was scratched that make it look like those scratches are actually on the coin.

I can see what you mean in the pictures. But what looks like several vertical scratches in the pictures, are not on the actual coin. I've looked carefully, and can only assume those scratches must be on something that the coin was in at the time when the picture was taken. Other possibility is it's only a stock photo, but other than the non-existant scratces that picture looks exactly like the coin I have.

If those scratches are your only basis for saying it's "harshly cleaned," then I guess the coin isn't. Though I don't doubt it's been cleaned, just not harshly so.

Anyway, thanks for your opinions all.

I agree the coin has been cleaned, but if the owner us happy with it, then that's ll that matters. I think it's a GREAT coin as well.

    Take Care

I see it as harshly cleaned as well.
A price under EF is probably about right but some would not pay that and others might pay a bit more.
Cleaned coins are tough to put a price on.:)

See the red circle areas - that I believe is the service cleaning they are talking about I think.

I say if you like the coin that is all that matters. To me the coin looks nice and it may even look better in hand. Some times our pictures do not show the true coin. I like the coin.

don't get me wrong, its a very nice coin. i always thought if the coin had those kind of vertical scratches that was a clue that the coin had been harshly cleaned by rubbing.

Would be if it did I suppose, but what looks like scratches in the picture are not on the coin as far as I can tell.

Anyway thanks for your opinions all.

Pictures will often show what cannot readily be seen in hand. You would need a loupe and need to hold the coin in the light at just the right angle to see it in hand.

I've looked at the coin itself under the eqivalent magnification the picture here shows, and those scratches simply are not on the coin. Pictures can show what's not there too, especially if whoever took the picture left it in some plastic holder which likely is where those scratches actually are.

You only have the pictures; I have the actual coin. If you want to insist there's scratches that aren't there we'll just have to agree to disagree since I lack the ability to provide a better picture. If you don't want to take my word for it, oh well, my opinion of the coin isn't dependant on someone else's. Not going to argue about it anymore. As long as I'm not trying to sell it to someone else, it's only my opinion that matters anyway... I thank everyone for their opinions, even the ones I disagree with.

    Hi Troodon.
It is much more than the scratches.
It's the total look of the coin at this point from the images you have posted.
Please post some new images and opinions may change.

Troodon - I am not insisting on anything. Several posts ago you asked -

Since then, I have been responding to that question, and the additional comments you have made since then, in my posts. That's all. All of the comments I have made have been accurate and they apply to any coin, not just this one. And I have made them in the interest of sharing knowledge with others - not just you.

I have remained silent on this thread because I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, and I can tell how proud Troodon is of the new coin. That said, I am also of the opinion this coin has been harshly cleaned. I think this because of the color of the coin, and the apparent hairlines running just clockwise of vertical that appear in the photo. Still a nice coin with a lot of detail, and if the price was right I see nothing wrong with it, but if it were priced as a problem-free specimen I wouldn't recommend keeping/buying it. Just my opinion, and it is the opinion of Troodon that reall matters...Mike

p.s. I would grade the coin XF details, cleaned, net VF, and would likely value it at high F/low VF money.

Does a grading service such as NGC grade a dipped coin? Or do they just return it ungraded?

Depends on the coin, but generally NGC doesn't care about dipping as long as it isn't "overdone"....Mike
