This coin is coming up for auction soon. I suspect it may be an accented Hair Variety based on what I see looking at the I in Liberty. The picture is bad, but it is the only one for the auction. I need your opinions of if it is an accented hair. If it is, I'm hoping it flies under the radar. Thank you in advance! 0.
Nah. It's a terrible picture, and between that and the toning, it's hard to see the lower serif -- but I'm pretty sure it's there. I'm also pretty sure there's zero chance that this is a proof of any variety.
I looked at that page too. But above it says 1964 Kennedy Half Dollars : Heavily Accented Hair 90% Silver Composition Mintage: N/A Minted at: Philadelphia (No Mint Mark) Designer - Engraver: Gilroy Roberts Metal Composition: 90% Silver - 10% Copper Diameter: 30.6 mm Mass / Weight: 12.5 grams What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.) That's part of the reason I'm confused
The 1964 accented hair JFK half is most definitely a proof. The heavily struck hair is extremely obvious. Here is my PCGS PR 67. Note the rims, showing a proof strike. Second, notice the strike, which is an obvious proof strike. Third, the hair is heavily struck, not just a normal clean strike. Look for proof die markers, which are absent on the op coin. The coin you posted is not an accented hair proof JFK. It is an ordinary business strike from the Philadelphia mint.
In that condition I’d personally pass as it’s only a variety and you can get much nicer ones for under $50.00. I bought a nice one about 3-4 months ago for $35.00 plus $5.00 shipping from one of the online retailers that I’ve used for years.
Take it slow and be patcient and you can have all the 64s at better prices.. the Gem BU i scored for only 20 and the MS66 for $26.. great buys are out there right now is the season of selling fast and cheap... next week will be a different story but there will still be good buys to be found
I blew up the OP photo and the serif does not look like the one you want. Since it has to be a proof coin, those dies were not used on the coin in the OP. It's an easy pass. Someone is going to over pay for that and there will be a follow up kerfuffle.
Thank you all for the great information. The coin I pictured in not listed as an accented Hair Variety. The I in liberty looked to be missing a serif, which brought me hopes it might be one. But now I'm convinced it's not. Thanks!
