thanks folks. i just checked on the website of the person i bought it from, and he claims to be a member of the ana and pcgs among other groups. i've sold other stuff i bought from him to other dealers and they had no issues.

but i'm wondering if it was a bit misleading to claim that he sold me a 1919 sovereign, which it seems the consensus is this technically isn't.

    Thanks

Thanks for all your help folks. I think this story will have a happy ending. As I mentioned, I only paid bullion price for this coin, back before gold made it's climb.

I called the shop who sold it to me four years ago this morning and basically said he only dealt in bullion sovereigns and only did weight, measuring, and acid tests on account of that. Admitted that because of this it was possible that a fake that was still the right weight in gold slipped in.

I guess the moral of the story is remember where you bought what, and make sure your dealer actually knows coins before making anything more than bullion purchases.

I may post a few of my other coins on here just for your entertainment, though I'm much more confident they are legit. (I hope!)
