I recently purchased this Greek (?) coin, and I am having trouble identifying it. I am hoping that someone will be able to help me, please? The first photo is of the 'Obverse'(?), and the next four photos are of the 'Reverse'(?) from different angles. Thank you. Possibly: AMPHIPOLIS, Macedonia, 186 B.C. (Time of Augustus) Rev. Two goats 'contending'. Obv. Head of Artemis Tauropolos/Apollo/Zeus (R). AE21.5mm., 8.66gm. (Chunky) Ref: Sear SG 1394; Plant 1092; SNG ANS 115-117 (?)
Hmm. Not sure this helps, but I have a "two goats contending" reverse but with Zeus on the obverse. I had a lot of trouble attributing it, and I am not sure I got it right. Mine seems to have more reverse lettering than yours: Thessalonica, Macedonia Æ19 (c. 187 - 31 B.C.) Laureate head of Zeus right / [Θ]E / [Σ]ΣA[ΛO] / NIKHΣ, Two goats butting heads. Moushmov 6595; SNG Cop 350. "Rare type, as it does not appear in Sear or HGC" (Ilya Zoblin). (6.94 grams / 19 mm)
I'm pretty sure you have a SNGANS 114; SNGCOP 62 Macedonia, Amphipolis, AE21, 6.57 OBV: Artemis Tauropolos head r. REV: Two goats standing and butting heads
In this case: https://research.britishmuseum.org/...x?assetId=642239001&objectId=1292165&partId=1 The ΑΛ of ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚEΣ is between the goats. On your coin the letters between the goats look also like ΑΛ . Therefore Thessalonica is IMHO a more likely possibility.
Cool Coin I thought they were horses lol amazing talent they have on here to attribute Greek Coinage!!!
