I bought a album with 50 silver bars in it. They are all 1 Troy oz. The certificates and receipts from the Columbia Mint are with it. I am new to collecting so I figured this would be a great place to ask for some assistance. I have google searched this set and have found nothing about it anywhere.
You may want to find a member here 1970silverartbar or along those lines he knows a great deal about 1970s silver art bars and may be able to help. Silver art bars are his collecting niche
google "the columbia mint", about the only thing I find is a couple lawsuits that are interesting. I'd like to see the hallmarks or a good pick of the front and back of just one of these bars, and the ability to read the documents in your photo's in full.
mint mark, I tried to take a pic of the mint mark. It is on the lower right corner of the back of the bars. I couldnt get a clear pic of it with the camera. too small and too shiny for my camera. Even with the flash off it was blurry. I drew a pic on the "paint" program.
Hello Will.S, I hope that the links to my thread that Krispy provided helped to answer your questions. Orpheus72 is also very knowledgeable about '70's silver art bars and he has helped me at times when I get stumped. I have not seen a complete set of this Columbia Mint sell on ebay, however, complete silver art bar sets such as the one that you have will usually sell for a higher premium. That is a very nice set that you have. This is the first time that I have seen the complete Columbia Mint set. I do not have the complete Columbia Mint set. I just have a couple of silver art bars from the Columbia Mint.
As they did. I had a hard time getting info on this set. The links provided what I needed to see. I bought several more items of silver from the same guy. One was gifted by President Ford. I will have to have someone look at the letter he signed to validate the signature though. Could be Auto-Pen. Not real sure how to tell. Its a real nice set of Silver Dollars. Every piece so far has checked out to be legit. This one just confused the hell out of me. It was just a matter of talking to the right people. Thanks for the help also. Best
You are welcome. I am happy that you were able to find the answers on this forum. Welcome to CoinTalk. :smile
Normally, '70's silver art bars will sell individually at between $3-$7 on average on ebay. This is based only on my past observations of watching certain select silver art bars sell on ebay. Some might sell higher than $7 over spot silver on ebay. It just depends on the silver art bar and the supply and demand for a particular silver art bar set. With current spot silver, (spot = $17.70) your Columbia Mint silver art bar set is worth $885.00 (50 bars X $17.70) in silver value alone. So with, for example, a $5 over spot premium per silver art bar in the set ($17.70 + $5 premium = $22.70/bar), that would be $1135.00 ($22.70 * 50 bars) as total value for the 50 bar Columbia Mint set. If you decide to sell it on ebay, then you should do it in a regular auction style and let the ebay market place decide what the value should be. A BIN price, in my opinion, would not work because ebay sellers tend to price silver art bars at too high of a price and they will not move and therefore resulting in continuous re-listing of a silver art bar item. Even though I have never seen a complete 50 bar Columbia Mint set sell on ebay, I have seen other complete '70's silver art bar sets sell for a very high premium on ebay in past ebay auctions. I think that any '70's silver art bar set that is complete and have the matching serial numbers will more than likely command a higher premium than normal because complete '70's silver art bar sets are usually hard to find.
You are welcome. I am glad that I was able to be of some help to you. You have a nice and complete Columbia Mint silver art bar set. If you decide to sell it, then you should sell it on ebay and you should sell it as a complete set because silver art bar collectors seem to be willing to pay more for complete silver art bar sets and that is based on past ebay auctions that I have seen for certain silver art bar sets.
