LOL, and thank you for your imput. The Victorinus coin that I posted just came in from the UK. , got it yesterday. If you look just past the nose toward the rim of the coin you can see the metal is melted a little. I believe that this coin was cleaned with electrolysis and that damage was caused by electrolysis, I received it this way.

Thats not melting, just a harder small patch of deposit on the surface which remained after cleaning. It may have been cleaned using electrolysis, but I doubt it and suspect chemical cleaning. probably acid. The person cleaning has a decision to make.....is the deposit left on the surface a big enough eyesore to risk leaving the coin in the acid longer and potentially stripping detail off the cleaned area of the coin... in this case it wasnt. you can also see a small yellowish blob left at the bottom of the obverse too.

I am not overly optimistic that this coin will be identifiable once clean(er ).
The green crust may be worth picking at after a quick dip in acetone as it appears to be a heavily corroded sandy patina which may loosen. Under that I do not see much, but it's worth a go.
If that all fails then why not nuke it with electrodes. .. there would be nothing to loose after that.

I have tried soaking in distilled water and then acetone. After this I tried picking at it with sharpened oak dowels (nothing came off). I have it now in a mix of a solution I read about on a metal detector forum. A lot of green has come out in the solution already. When this coin is wet you can see the detail. This is truly the worst coin I have (its a challenge!!). And its a shame because of what the coin is but I am going to try everything I can before I nuke this . I actually made an electrolysis rig yesterday and tried it on a clad quarter I found while metal detecting. I could not believe all the junk that came out in the solution of this pre-rinsed quarter. And when I stopped the quarter was copper in color. Maybe I used the wrong solution. Thanks for your imput.

Oh my goodness!! I cant believe what you have here.....!!!!!
I know people claim to see the face of Jesus in a cloud, or the impression of Elvis on a waffle , but am I the only one who can see the extremely scarce Michael Jackson in a campgate!!!! variety????

It is supposed to be the three standards. You thought you could help me ha! Not with this one? At least I didn't pay a dime for it. Well we are working on it.

I know the reverse is of 3 standards. On the obverse I think I see Jud in the name.

I have the back of the head exposed. I am soaking it in a solution. You cant see nothing from those pictures. I will post more pictures as it is cleaned. That green stuff is very hard and is taking time, probably part of the patina.
