Late Roman Empire, 4th century AD. I can't tell the emperor, but we have several folks on here who specialize in this series and who know far more about this type than I do.

In that shape with the patina stripped... it has value as an interesting piece of history... but probably not worth more than a few dollars. Give it to someone with an interest in history... to them it will be worth more than $.

I knew it was Constantine the Great, I'm getting better at identifying emperors! Dark Side here I come.

Both of mine are a bit different making them RIC 435 rather than 429 as I believe to have been correctly quoted by OJ. Can you see the difference and what makes my two different from each other? These are Dark Side skills that will be needed if you study late Romans but mean nothing if you decide to go for earlier coins. I'm no specialist in these so I'll ask help from those who are. Do both of my coins show a RIC bust type B1? What does a B6 look like?

I see on the reverse, the man on the bottom right and child on top left are positioned differently. Also the bead liens below the child. On the obverse behind COnstantines head the top one has one strand and bottom has two.

I need to get a copy of RIC for my journey through the Dark Side.

Not quite... the difference you are looking for is on the reverse though!

A palm but it is only clear on my second coin. RIC is less likely to catalog little details than differences in the mintmarks (even dots). I once corresponded with a man who was very interested in differences in the number and position of the ties on the laurel wreath or diadem on the portrait. RIC mentioned none of these.

I consider RIC VI, VII and VIII worth buying if you are collecting coins of the period they cover. I do not recommend them for the numbers they provide but for the information in the text and notes as well as the overview of the organization of various issues.
