I've managed to identify around 20 of the coins from the Bag o Romans and have posted many of them at CT. The coin below is one of a handful that has me stumped. All of my limited knowledge tells me it's Phillip II and the reverse matches: Philip II AE 25mm of Mesopotamia, Nisibis. AYTOK K M IOVLI FILLIPOC CEB, radiate, draped, cuirassed and beardless bust left / Tetrastyle temple with fluted columns, in which Tyche, veiled, seated facing; ram jumping above her; river god swimming below. BMC 22 Here is my coin and the obvious difference is the bust facing right instead of left. Any help is appreciated. Also, please post coins that have stumped you in the past:
I bet you're right! Maybe Philip I? This thing has had me stumped for a year. My flip insert says "Byzantine trachy", that's as far as I got!
The more I look at what I posted , the more I realize that's the wrong picture. You can't read the obverse at all. Tomorrow, I will post the right one. My guess is the better pic will be identifiable by someone here. I seem to be stubbing my toe here at CT in more than one thread today.
MESOPOTAMIA, Nisibis. Philip II. AD 247-249. Æ ). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / City goddess seated facing; above, ram leaping right, head left; all within tetrastyle temple. SNG Copenhagen 242 corr. (under Philip I; same obv. die). https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=286278
I was in the process of thanking @Youngcoin for having (misplaced) confidence in my skills when the next post popped up. I took the coin itself and compared the faint writing on the obverse to the pic, and it sure seems like a match. So, I can't thank @arnoldoe enough. Now, I have to figure out why I missed the bust facing right example on wildwinds...so, a small quest remains. Thanks again to everyone for indulging me, not just for this thread, but for all of them. Gerard
