Yup. Not "easily" done, (meaning 99.9% of attempts by people not knowing how will fail), but doable. Regarding variability of toning, a ton of it has to to do with environment of course, but do not forget that environment is very much affected by how many coins you are storing together. When people say they stored coins in manila envelopes for 30 years and they didn't tone I have only seen that true when they put them in a large box with a lot of coins together. One, they were controlling moisture flow, and two they were severely lessening the gases an individual coin would be subjected to by storing so many together. Think about why only end coins tone on a roll. Same deal. Store the same coins, in the same envelopes, loose and not crammed together in a box, and you might see much different results.
